Chapter Six

“I still can’t believe your mom and that rat bastard Hammond Asshat the third got away,” Dax sniffed. “I didn’t even know she could run.”

"Oh, she ran alright," Bonnie Sue assured with her twin sister adding, "Like she was shot out of a gun."

“Yeah, but what bothers me the most is that Vanessa is still out there,” Bryn tried not to growl. “It’s all well and good that Amaryllis is dead and that without her the rest of her children can’t be ‘hatched’, but why did my mother run?”

“I still don’t get why ‘Spider Woman’ had to make you jump through all those hoops,” Dax wondered as she picked up another chocolate chip cookie. “I mean, if she needed you and Zach to be together and Witch and her Dragon, then why wait? Why not make it happen sooner rather than later? And where the hell was Fate in all this?”

“I was wondering the same thing,” Maggie Mae chimed in, also reaching for something good out of the basket Barbara had dropped off earlier. “I mean, now that we all know She’s a real live – albeit omnipotent -person, why did she get involved?”

Nodding as she looked at all three ladies, Bryn explained what she’d figured out so far. “The books I’ve been reading and according to Cheveyo and Emma – the Thorntree Tribe Historian – in the Legend of Narcissa, it says that the only way the ‘Scorned Woman’ can exact her revenge is to take the Magic of a Witch of Marron Blood who is Mated to the fourth Dragon born to the fourth brother of the fourth King of the Bronze Dragons.”

“And that just had to be you,” Dax chuckled lovingly and with a wicked gleam in her eye. “Of course, it did. The Universe made you to do everything the hard way, Fate made sure you got hooked up Zach, why should the fact that you are mentioned in some obscure legend surprise me?”

“Wow,” Bryn scoffed, throwing her hands out the side. “That’s all the sympathy I get? Really? I could’ve died.” Barely holding back her own laughter, she quickly pushed out her bottom lip and pouted, I see how it is?”

“Aww, we love you, the Sampson sisters sing-songed in unison.

Getting to her feet and crossing the great room of the house she and Zach would soon share, Bryn came up behind the Wolves, wrapped her arms around them both, and hugged them tightly. "Thank you for that – both of you. And for coming to my rescue. I don't know what we would've done without you."

“You’dve been just fine. I have no doubt about it, but…” Bonnie Sue snickered, her eyes sliding to her sister’s. “…the second Maggie heard Colton callin’ for his brothers, she was out the door. I had to run full speed just to catch up.”

“Oh,” Bryn teased, her voice getting higher as her eyes got wider and she shook her shoulders. “Is love in the air?”

“Hell no,” Maggie quickly protested, just a bit too adamant in her denial.
